Australia’s Technology Revolution

Australia is in the midst of a major technology transformation – or at least that’s what we've been led to believe, based on what we've been witnessing over recent times.  But what are others in our industry seeing, what’s behind this shift, and what does it mean for businesses?

To find out, we brought together 3 of Australia’s most influential technology leaders to share their insights, opinions and unique perspectives on the current state of the business communications landscape – they didn’t disappoint.

Leading the discussion was Cisco CTO, technology industry heavyweight and ‘tech evangelist’ Kevin Bloch. Joining Kevin was telco veteran Neil Verrall of NBN Co and the lead on Australia’s largest retail network transformation project, Shane Hazim of Australia Post.

One thing was clear from the start of the discussion, we’re not imagining things – as Kevin eloquently put it, we’re witnessing a perfect storm right now across the technology landscape in Australia.

The convergence of new software defined network technologies such as SD-WAN, with the symmetrical highspeed connectivity available through Australia’s national broadband network, is changing the game for Australian businesses.

Kevin highlighted the significance of August 15, 2019 – a day that saw Telstra earnings drop significantly, in line with the NBN experiencing the largest period of growth.  This was a point in time at which according to Neil, the balance of power has shifted in the Australian carrier marketplace.

The power once held by the big telcos had now shifted squarely to the hands of Australian businesses, along with the ability to now take and maintain control of their own network connectivity.

Increasingly, and across industry sectors, businesses are demanding their networks be always-on, with greater resilience and uptime.  So too has there been an increased appetite for greater control, greater governance and the ability to purchase guaranteed outcomes.

Australia Post, who oversee Australia’s largest retail network, perfectly demonstrate this.  Their current network transformation project – the largest SD-WAN deployment of its kind in our region – is delivering greater resilience and significantly improved uptime for the communities around Australia who rely on Australia Post as a central hub, particularly during times of isolation.

Carrier independence is a key advantage for businesses utilising the NBN, but it’s the ability for businesses to pick and choose multiple carriers to service various aspects of their network and connection points that Kevin points out is a genuine game changer for business.

Through Comscentre, Shane says that Australia Post has a ‘single pane of glass view’ of their network and carriage environment, enabling complete control over their environment. With multi-carrier redundancy and enhanced SLAs through NBN, Australia Post are essentially buying an outcome, with that outcome being greater network resilience and uptime – the ‘always-on’ network.

It’s a new world for carriers and businesses alike right now – and we’re watching very keenly as this network revolution continues to playout.
